Dean Herrington Takes Position at Occidental

Dean Herrington, Hart High’s offensive coordinator for 12 seasons and architect of a passing attack that has produced four Southern Section championships, said Tuesday he has resigned to become offensive coordinator at Occidental College.

Since Herrington took over in 1989, the Indians have had an All-Southern Section quarterback every season. His last three --David Neill, Kyle Boller and Kyle Matter--signed with Nevada, California and Stanford, respectively.

His departure will break up the Herrington brothers, with Mike remaining as head coach and brother Rick as defensive coordinator.

Davis Delmatoff, former Hart quarterback who joined the program last season as an assistant, is expected to take over as offensive coordinator.

“Hey, I finally got rid of him,” Mike said jokingly. “We’re finally going to score a few points in the semifinals.”

Dean has been seeking a college position for several years.

“It’s a good move for him,” Mike said. “We’re losing one of the best offensive minds around in high school football.”
