Gauchos Advance to Second Round
Mike Donegan scored 25 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead Saddleback to a 90-80 victory over Mt. San Antonio in the first round of the Southern California community college men’s basketball regional Saturday at Saddleback.
Saddleback (30-2), seeded second in the regional, advanced to the second round. On Wednesday the Gauchos will host Mt. San Jacinto, a 73-69 winner over Mira Costa on Friday.
Kevin Williams had 20 points for the Gauchos. Mark Brown had 13 points and eight assists. Mt. San Antonio (12-19) was led by Joseth Dawson with 23 points, and Kevin Lawrence with 20 points and 16 rebounds.
In another Southern California regional game:
Ventura 80, Cypress 69--Brandon Erquhart scored 16 points and Abe Lorenzana had 15 points and five assists for the visiting Chargers (13-18). Desmond Paniger had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Ventura (23-8).
In the Southern California women’s basketball regional:
Bakersfield 66, Orange Coast 53--The Pirates pulled to within seven with 7:42 to play but could get no closer. Karen Fierst scored 15 points, Nadia Mojica added 12 and Megan Masuda finished with 10 for Orange Coast (16-16). Bakersfield is 22-10.
San Diego Mesa 70, Fullerton 58--The Hornets (11-20) were down, 12-1, early in the game. Reena Gonzales had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Kristen Hayman had 14 points for Fullerton. San Diego Mesa is 19-12.
In nonconference baseball:
Fullerton 1, Cuesta 0 (6, rain)--Mike Rodriguez scored on a fifth-inning wild pitch to lift host Fullerton (6-5) to victory in a rain-shortened game.
