Northridge Men Place Second in Conference Championships

Artis Carhee, DiMarcus Williams and John Dagata each won events on Saturday to help the Cal State Northridge men finish second in the Big Sky Conference indoor track and field championships at Montana State.

Northridge, paced by Carhee in the 55-meter dash, Williamsin the 400 and Dagata in the 35-pound weight throw, totaled 107 points to finish behind Weber State’s 121 in the two-day meet.

Defending champion Northern Arizona was third with 106 points.

Northridge finished fourth in the women’s meet behind Malinda Malone’s victories in the 55 and 200, and Dee Scott’s victory in the triple jump.

The Matadors totaled 90 points to finish behind Montana State (124), Weber State (120) and defending champion Northern Arizona (104).

Carhee’s 6.30 in the 55 broke the school record of 6.32 set by Chris Pippens in 1991.

Williams covered the 400 in a career best of 47.94 and placed third in the 200 in 21.84.

Dagata’s throw of 61-3 crushed his previous best of 59-4.

Malone, a freshman from Cleveland High, ran a career-best 7.09 in the 55 and tied her best in the 200 with a time of 24.43.

Scott was selected as the women’s field event athlete of the meet after a career best of 42-4 1/4 in the triple jump.

SWIMMING

Big West Conference championships--Lisa Andrade of Northridge won the women’s 100-meter breaststroke in 1:03.45, helping the Matadors finish third behind UC Santa Barbara and Pacific at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

The Northridge men placed fifth.
