Water Main Break Splits Malibu House
The residents of a Malibu home escaped injury Saturday when a broken water main caused a portion of the structure to break off and fall into a ravine.
The porch and the chimney of a house in 21500 block of Paseo Serra broke off and slid down the slope shortly after 2 p.m., when water from the damaged main saturated the ground beneath the house, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Mo Angel.
“It was like a knife cutting off a chunk. People were in the residence. But no one was hurt.”
Sheriff’s deputies evacuated five nearby homes and closed a lane of Pacific Coast Highway between Carbon Canyon Road and Rambla Vista Street, he said.
Residents returned home after Malibu Water Department personnel plugged the leak about 6:30 p.m.
