Irvine Councilman Mike Ward will serve as the Orange County Transportation Authority Board’s new chairman, officials announced this week.

Ward replaces Fountain Valley Councilwoman Laurann Cook, who will remain as a board director.

The OCTA board also elected 3rd District County Supervisor Todd Spitzer as its vice chairman Monday. New board members include Buena Park Mayor Art Brown and Anaheim City Councilwoman Shirley McCracken as alternate board member.

Ward, 54, previously served as the agency’s vice chairman. In his new position, Ward said he will continue to address the higher number of commuters projected to come from outside the county.

Trying to achieve “a balanced transportation system means we will have to look at all avenues of transportation, including freeways, city arterials, Metrolink and bus service,” he said.
