A man was struck and killed by a Metrolink train Friday morning about a quarter-mile west of the Van Nuys rail station, authorities said.

The unidentified pedestrian, believed to be 30 to 40 years old, was hit by the southbound train at 7:22 a.m., said Brian Humphrey, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman. Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene. No one on the train was reported injured.

About 300 to 400 commuters remained aboard for about 40 minutes after the accident before being transferred to another train, said Claudia Keith, a Metrolink spokeswoman.

Rail service along the Oxnard to Los Angeles southbound line was delayed about an hour during the morning rush hour, Keith said. Trains were expected to operate on schedule during the Friday evening commute. Northbound train service was not affected.

The accident remained under investigation Friday by the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division.
