Arson Fire Guts Home of Nadadores Swim Team

From Times Staff Reports

A two-alarm blaze that gutted the locker and pool equipment rooms at the Mission Viejo Aquatic Center early Wednesday was intentionally set, fire officials said.

About 35 firefighters responded to the fire at Marguerite Parkway and Casa Del Sol, where the world-class Nadadores swim team practices. Nobody was injured in the fire, which caused about $230,000 in damage, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Kirk Summers.

The fire started in an outside storage area and spread to the locker room and the pool equipment room, where the pool's pump and filtering systems are kept. The buildings were damaged, but Summers said the pool systems are intact. The business office, which is part of the same building where the fire broke out, was undamaged.

The fire took about 45 minutes to control. Officials would not say how the blaze was set. Anyone with information is asked to call the arson tip line at (800) 542-8282.
