It’s the Middle of July, and the Call Is Icing

Just a suggestion for Mighty Duck management in their ongoing California Misadventure: In the Ducks’ hall-of-fame exhibit at the Pond, proudly displayed are the phone used to draft Guy Hebert with the franchise’s first pick, and the pucks from Teemu Selanne’s first hat trick with the team. In order to highlight our great Duck heritage, perhaps the phone used to notify Hebert of his release, and the pucks from Selanne’s hat trick with San Jose in his first game against the Ducks, could be added to the exhibit.

Oh, and why not charge fans for the privilege of viewing all of this--why waste an opportunity for profit? The money saved can be used for another fourth-rate free-agent signing.

An open letter to Tim Leiweke:

I am at a loss to understand the Kings’ off-season moves. You insult Luc Robitaille with an offer far less than his market worth, thereby chasing him to conference rival Detroit, leaving a 37-goal, 88-point hole in the offense. Now “that Jagr guy” (as your boss, Phil Anschutz, referred to him two years ago as the marquee name he coveted to fill Staples Center) is traded for draft picks and cash--both of which the Kings have in abundance--yet no discernible move is made to get him or any other quality free agent to fill the gap left by Robitaille. These actions (or lack thereof) speak volumes about just how truly committed your organization is to winning.

Did any of those letter writers last week actually watch Luc Robitaille struggle his way through the playoffs, beaten to every puck and corner? Congratulations to Dave Taylor for making a gutsy, if unpopular move.
