Arizona Gets Pitcher Lopez
The Arizona Diamondbacks, trying to strengthen their rotation for the pennant chase, acquired right-hander Albie Lopez and catcher Mike DiFelice from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday night.
The National League West-leading Diamondbacks sent promising young left-hander Nick Bierbrodt, minor league outfielder Jason Conti and cash to the Devil Rays.
Lopez, who grew up in Mesa, Ariz., was 5-12 with a 5.33 earned-run average with the Devil Rays.
Nomar Garciaparra’s first hit this year helped spark the Pawtucket Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Indianapolis Indians in an International League game at Indianapolis. The Boston Red Sox star was the designated hitter in the second game of his rehabilitation assignment with the triple-A team. . . . Left-hander John Parrish was sent back to triple-A Rochester by the Baltimore Orioles after he lost the first game of Wednesday night’s doubleheader against the Texas Rangers. . . . Florida Marlin right-hander Chuck Smith could be sidelined for the season because of an elbow injury.
