Liaw, Telliard, Metzler Advance in Junior Golf

Henry Liaw of Rowland Heights, Phillip Telliard of Riverside and Kyle Metzler of Rancho Murrieta survived the first two rounds of match play Thursday in the U.S. Junior Golf Championship at Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio.

Liaw and Telliard will play each other in the third round. Metzler, a 6-and-5 winner over Scott Gustafson of Eden Prairie, Minn., in the second round, will play Brendon Todd of Cary, N.C.

Kevin Na of Diamond Bar lost to Chanin Puntawong of Bradenton, Fla., in a second-round match that went 19 holes. Brandon Hillpot of Colton also lost in the second round.

Nicholas Wilkins of Loma Linda and Josh Wooding of Riverside lost in the first round.

* Stella Lee of Irvine and Jane Park of La Crescenta were eliminated from the U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship with losses in the third round of match play at Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan.

Lee lost to Whitney Welch of Las Vegas, 2 and 1, and Park lost by the same score to Allyson Harvie of Grass Valley. They were the last Southern Californians remaining in the tournament.

Morgan Pressel, 13, of Boca Raton, Fla., who qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open earlier this year, won twice Thursday and advanced to play Nicole Perrot of Chile today in a semifinal match.
