Charles Nagy, sidelined all season because of an injured right elbow, will start today for the Cleveland Indians against the New York Yankees.

“I’m kind of excited,” he said. “I put a lot of work in to get back here.”

Indian Manager Charlie Manuel turned to Nagy for today’s game when left-hander Chuck Finley was put on the disabled list because of muscle spasms in his upper back and neck.

The Indians called up right-hander Jake Westbrook.

Yankee Manager Joe Torre will start Ramiro Mendoza on Monday against the Boston Red Sox because he was hesitant to start Mike Mussina against Pedro Martinez for a third time in 12 days.

With the uncertainty of Orlando Hernandez’s toe injury, the Yankees may look for a prominent pitcher to strengthen their roster. Available is former Yankee David Wells, who’s struggling with the Chicago White Sox.

Torre downplayed suggestions that he did not get along with Wells during their two years together.

Texas Ranger Manager Jerry Narron, who took over last month after Johnny Oates’ resignation, will be given a two-year contract extension through the 2003 season. . . . Rick Ankiel, continuing to work on his control, pitched a simulated game for more than an hour and threw only one wild pitch at the St. Louis Cardinals’ spring training facility at Jupiter, Fla. . . . The San Francisco Giants recalled infielder Edwards Guzman from triple-A Fresno. First baseman J.T. Snow was put on the disabled list Friday because of a bruised rib. . . . Matt Williams of the Arizona Diamondbacks, scheduled to come off the disabled list Saturday, will be sidelined at least another week because of a strained left hamstring.
