From Staff Reports

To pass time in Chicago on Thursday, Jeff Weaver and Robert Fick of the Detroit Tigers went to a taping of the “Jerry Springer Show” as guests of one of Springer’s security members, Steve Wilkos.

Wilkos asked Weaver to put on a security shirt and help the crew. Before he knew it, the former Simi Valley High pitcher was breaking up fights among onstage guests.

“I thought I’d do a little thing here and there, but before I knew it, they had me up there every two seconds asking me questions and stuff,” Weaver said. “One of the women in the audience started yelling, ‘Can I give Jeff a hug?’ And so Jerry let her.

“It’s not something I’d want to make a habit of doing. I don’t think I’d want to hang around with those type of people every day of my life.”

Weaver said the taping was the season finale and no air date is scheduled.

Golf

Mark Taylor of Thousand Oaks might have a bit of an advantage over about 100 players bidding for five or six spots in the U.S. Open in 36 holes of sectional qualifying Monday at El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.

Taylor is head professional at El Caballero.

Also in the field are noted amateurs Tim Hogarth of Northridge and Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, who recently won the Pasadena City Championship.

Another survivor of local qualifying is Anthony Kim, 15, who transferred this school year from Campbell Hall High to La Quinta and recently won the Southern Section championship.

The 101st U.S. Open will be played June 14-17 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.

Softball

Jalena Martinez of Santa Paula and Lacy Albrent of Nordhoff were chosen co-most valuable players of the Frontier League, and Rudy Bustillos of Santa Paula was selected coach of the year.
