Outreach for Airport Expansion Hearings

Share

Re “Foes Deride Airport Plans at Hearing,” June 10: A critic blamed low turnout at public hearings about the Los Angeles International Airport modernization plan on insufficient outreach efforts by Los Angeles World Airports. We wish to point out that the facts do not support such a position.

We believe the outreach we’ve conducted over the last five months about the hearings is unprecedented for such a major public works project in Los Angeles or anywhere. LAWA spent more than $70,000 on ads announcing the hearings in newspapers. We sent out news releases to all the news media in town as well as public service announcements to all the broadcast media. For more than three weeks--on every cable system in Los Angeles--a video about the master plan was broadcast daily with details on the times and locations of the hearings. Mailings about the hearings were sent to 60,000 people over the last five months, and LAWA spokespersons gave scores of presentations to community groups that included the same information.

Those who for any reason were unable to attend a hearing have until July 25 to provide their comments in writing to LAWA or the Federal Aviation Administration.
