Rios Out for 2-3 Months Because of Ankle Injury

Tennis player Marcelo Rios of Chile, once ranked No. 1 in the world, suffered a torn ligament in his left ankle and will be sidelined two to three months.

Rios was injured while training at a gym last weekend and was scheduled for surgery Monday, trainer Carlos Cardemil said.

Rios has lost in the early rounds of key tournaments this season, including the Italian, German and French opens.

He was fined $10,000 by the ATP for his conduct during the Italian Open in May. Rios became rowdy at a party and later was accused of attacking a taxi driver and two police officers, the ATP said.

Xavier Malisse of Belgium defeated third-seeded Arnaud Clement of France, 6-4, 6-4, in the Heineken Trophy tournament, a Wimbledon warmup at Den Bosch, Netherlands. Among the women, sixth-seeded Patty Schnyder of Switzerland was upset by Jelena Bovina of Russia, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia defeated Maria Diaz-Olivia of Argentina, 6-4, 6-2. . . . Wayne Arthurs of Australia tuned up for Wimbledon with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Sargis Sargsian of Armenia in the Samsung Open at Nottingham, England.

Lindsay Davenport plays her first match in almost three months when she faces Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France on Wednesday at Eastbourne, England.

Davenport has not played since quitting a match in March because of a bruised right knee. This will be her first match on grass since losing to Venus Williams in last year’s Wimbledon final.

Freddie Mitchell, the Philadelphia Eagles’ first-round draft pick from UCLA, arrived at mini-camp for the first time. The wide receiver missed camp last month because of an NCAA rule that prevents college seniors from taking part in any NFL activities until their class graduates, which comes later at UCLA than many other schools. Mitchell petitioned the NFL for an exception but was denied.

Wide receiver Ike Hilliard of the New York Giants underwent foot surgery to remove part of a bone from his big toe. Coach Jim Fassel said last week he does not expect Hilliard to participate in training camp, which begins July 26.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released cornerback Alex Ardley, one day after he crashed a sports utility vehicle into a home in Tallahassee, Fla., and was charged with drunk driving.

Troy Davis, a former NCAA rushing leader from Iowa State, signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL after spending the 1997-99 seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

Ted Williams is scheduled to be moved today from a rehabilitation hospital in San Diego to a University of Florida hospital, two sources told the Associated Press.

It will be the 82-year-old hall of famer’s second cross-country flight in four months. He was brought from New York, where he underwent open-heart surgery on Jan. 15, to Sharp Hospital in San Diego on Feb. 19. A Sharp hospital spokeswoman said she couldn’t comment about his condition, at the family’s request. However, Bob Breitbard, Williams’ friend since high school, said Williams is encouraged by his progress.

Center-left wing Juha Ylonen was traded from the Phoenix Coyotes to the Tampa Bay Lightning for left wing Todd Warriner.

In WNBA games, Lauren Jackson had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead the host Storm (5-4) over Charlotte, 60-52, before 4,016 at Seattle. It was the fourth consecutive loss for the Sting (1-7), which had cut Seattle’s lead to 50-47. . . . Nykesha Sales scored 20 points to help Orlando (2-6) end a five-game losing streak with a 72-65 victory over Indiana (2-6) before 7,682 at Indianapolis.

Ron Polk, who this season directed Georgia to its first College World Series since 1990, told school officials that he will return to Mississippi State, where he coached for more than two decades. Mississippi State plans to announce Polk’s hiring today.

Howard Shapiro, an attorney for former Dallas Cowboy wide receiver Michael Irvin, said a grand jury in Texas is set to hear testimony Thursday about Irvin’s arrest last summer. Irvin was arrested Aug. 9 at a north Dallas apartment where law officers said they found marijuana and other drugs. Two days after the arrest, members of a drug task force said they would not seek marijuana charges against Irvin.

Fairron Newton, an Atlanta sports agent, was sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay more than $240,000 restitution for his involvement in preparation of a false federal income tax return. Newton, 31, also was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.
