FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Bass averaging 1-4 pounds are biting on shad and night crawlers and small plastic worms. Striped bass are hit and miss. A 16-8 was caught on a swimbait.

PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish are biting on mackerel and bass are biting early on top-water lures and plastics.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass action has improved. Harry Jioras, Ojai, 12-0 and 10-4 bass, on an Osprey lure. A 13 1/2-pounder was also weighed. Catfish action is steady. Ed Guyette, Ventura, three catfish totaling 21 pounds, on mackerel. Larry Sohasky, Ventura, 15 red-ear perch totaling 17 pounds, on night crawlers. Trout action is good for trollers (Needlefish) and drifters (night crawlers).

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout remain the best bet and limits are coming mostly at the west end. The fish are holding at 30-40 feet and biting on night crawlers and needlefish. A fair bass bite is in progress in early mornings on crankbaits and plastic worms.

Orange County

IRVINE LAKE--Bass, trout, crappie and catfish are showing on the hooks, though fishing is only fair for all but catfish, which are very active late.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish are active in the afternoons and evenings; marshmallow-mealworm combos are best. Bass fishing is good early and late, with frogs and Pop-Rs best. A 7-pounder was caught.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKE--The catfish bite is fair and a few trout are being caught daily.

San Bernardino County

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--The trout bite is good and 4-5 rainbow tops the list. Fly fishermen are doing well with black gnats.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--The catfish bite is good at night and recent plants included fish to 20 pounds. Crappie are striking small jigs tipped with mealworms. Some bluegill.

LAKE PERRIS--Emmett Smith, Moreno Valley, 7-6 bass on a Castaic Shad at the island’s east shore. The bass bite is fair but for Mostly smaller fish.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass and striped bass are the main targets, and both are biting well. Dark plastics and night crawlers are best for the largemouths; anchovies and chicken livers are best for stripers. Some catfish.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout action is good on all baits. Trolling bright lures is best. A 6-4 bass was caught on a night crawler.

DIXON LAKE--Catfish action at night is best, with mackerel the top bait. Trout and bass action is slow as the fish are deep.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--An 11-3 bass caught on a crankbait at Lower Otay tops the list. The bluegill bite is the best bet there. Bass action is only fair at the bass lakes. Bluegill action is excellent at San Vicente. Crappie are active at Hodges and El Capitan.

LAKE WOHLFORD--The bass bite is good for mostly three-pounders but a 9-6 was caught on a crankbait at Bass Point. Catfish are becoming active.

Eastern Sierra

BISHOP AREA--Bishop Creek remains the best bet, but the high lakes and Intake II are producing too. A few fish came in at about five pounds but the majority are one-pounders caught on Power Bait, salmon eggs and small spinners. Owens River is fair for bank fishermen and good for drifters.

MAMMOTH LAKES AREA--Crowley Lake’s trout bite has improved, for mostly small fish taking midge flies (McGee Bay) and trolled Needlefish. Convict Lake and creek are only fair. The basin lakes are slightly better and Lake Mary has produced a few trout topping six pounds.

JUNE LAKE LOOP--All the lakes are fair to good early and slow to fair during the day. June has the edge on bigger fish.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--46 anglers (1 boat): 290 rockfish, 20 bolina, 1 cabezon.

AVILA BEACH (Patriot Sportfishing)--30 anglers (2 boats): 91 rockcod, 191 bolina, 2 kelp greenling.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--27 anglers (1 boat): 7 barracuda, 69 calico bass, 10 mackerel, 56 rockfish, 17 sand bass, 1 sheephead, 2 white seabass. (Hornet’s Landing)--14 anglers (1 boat): 28 calico bass, 15 mackerel, 3 ocean whitefish, 5 red snapper, 36 rockfish, 5 sand bass.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--165 anglers (6 boats): 3 yellowtail, 8 white seabass, 2 halibut, 246 barracuda, 270 calico bass, 73 sand bass, 139 rockfish, 109 ocean whitefish, 29 red snapper, 20 sculpin, 37 sheephead, 53 perch. (Captain Hook’s)--56 anglers (3 boats): 144 calico bass, 266 sand bass, 84 barracuda, 3 halibut, 11 rockfish, 7 yellowtail.

PORT HUENEME--79 anglers (4 boats): 1 white seabass, 356 calico bass, 81 barracuda, 193 sand bass, 1 halibut, 18 shallow-water rockfish, 123 ocean whitefish, 27 sand dabs.

MARINA DEL REY--138 anglers (5 boats): 27 barracuda, 370 calico bass, 5 halibut, 96 sand bass, 2 sheephead.

REDONDO BEACH--89 anglers (5 boats): 404 barracuda, 230 calico bass, 23 sand bass, 21 rockfish, 12 whitefish, 6 sculpin, 2 sheephead.
