Calvary Chapel Aims for Seventh Title

Defending champion Santa Ana Calvary Chapel will try to win a record seventh title this weekend at the state wrestling championships at the University of the Pacific.

The meet begins at 9 a.m. Friday, with competition through the quarterfinals and second consolation round. Semifinals start at 10 a.m. Saturday with championship finals scheduled for 7 p.m.

Ten Calvary Chapel wrestlers, among them six division champions, qualified for the state meet based on their performances at last week’s Southern Section Masters meet.

Last year, Calvary Chapel won the state title without an individual state champion. The Eagles tied Fresno Clovis for the most team titles and set a meet record with 143.5 points, breaking the previous mark of 136.5 set by Calvary Chapel’s 1997 team.

Orlando Galvan of Anaheim Loara, who won the state title at 103 pounds last year, will compete at 112 pounds this weekend. Galvan finished second to Calvary Chapel’s Anthony Rodriquez at 112 pounds in the Masters meet.

City Section champion San Fernando qualified five wrestlers.

140: Angelo Lago (Temecula Valley), Salvador Vasquez (University).

145: Brian LeMay (Capistrano Valley), Ramon Perry (San Fernando).

152: Frank Richmond (La Palma Kennedy), Fritz Javellana (Granada Hills).

160: Greg Smith (Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World), Conrad Silva (San Fernando).

171: Willie Parks (Calvary Chapel), Will German (San Fernando).
