Left-hander Dan Reid pitched four innings and picked up the victory Friday as No. 1-ranked Villa Park beat Los Alamitos, 8-3, in the first round of the Loara tournament at Villa Park High.

Reid, who went 9-0 last season and was named to The Times’ Orange County first team, got help from Chris Bragg, who came on in the fifth inning and Justin Stires, who finished off the defending Sunset League champions with a perfect seventh inning of relief.

Reid allowed two earned runs, four hits, struck out four and walked one. “He wasn’t as sharp as he’s going to be,” Villa Park Coach Tom Tereschuk said, “but he did a good job of getting ready for his first outing. The whole team did a good job getting ready, considering the recent weather.”

The Spartans (1-0) manufactured a run immediately when leadoff batter Ben Hanna singled to center, took second on a wild pitch, took third on a groundout and scored when Bryan Arguello hit a sacrifice fly.

In the second inning the Spartans used three singles and two stolen bases to post two more runs and take a 3-0 lead.

Los Alamitos (0-1) got a run in the third, but the Spartans put away the game with a five-run fourth inning.

The Spartans play Diamond Bar at 7 p.m. today at Glover Stadium in the second round.
