Sea Kings Justify Their No. 1 Ranking

Corona del Mar, the county’s top-ranked boys’ tennis team, defeated No. 3 Los Alamitos, 13-5, in a nonleague match Tuesday at Old Ranch Tennis Club in Seal Beach.

Garrett Snyder led a Sea King sweep in singles, winning all 18 games played. Cameron Ball swept, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, and Brian Morton, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2, for the Sea Kings (2-0).

Corona del Mar’s Peter Kulmaticki and Michael Bean teamed to sweep in doubles, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3.

In other nonleague matches:

Canyon 12, No. 10 Irvine 6--The doubles teams of Travis Kula-Brad Bogner and Andy Tran-Arjun Makam each won three sets for Canyon (2-0).

No. 7 Dana Hills 18, Fountain Valley 0--Sumil Menon lost only two games in singles and Blake Meister and Jordan Villwock lost only one in doubles for Dana Hills (1-0).

In second-round games at the Costa Mesa/Foothill baseball tournament:

Costa Mesa 8, Rancho Alamitos 5--Steven Shores homered and doubled and Carlos Franco and Nick Cabico also had two hits each for the Mustangs (2-0), who advanced to Thursday’s semifinals.

Brad French homered twice for Rancho Alamitos (1-1).

Mater Dei 7, Tustin 1--Richard Mercado’s two-run double in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie for visiting Mater Dei (2-0). Mercado was two for three with three RBIs and Daniel Perales had three hits for the Monarchs.

Warren Chenier allowed three hits and struck out four in five innings to earn the victory.

Ocean View 8, Garden Grove 5 (5, darkness)--Ryan Yoakum tied the score, 5-5, with a leadoff home run in the fifth for host Ocean View (2-0). The Seahawks then scored three unearned runs in the inning on four Garden Grove errors.

In consolation games:

Sonora 2, Calvary Chapel 1 (11)--Catcher Blake Shaw singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th for the Raiders (1-1), who play Tustin on Thursday. Robert Maxson homered for Calvary Chapel.

In quarterfinal games at the Loara tournament:

Canyon 10, No. 8 Kennedy 1--Sean Driscol pitched six innings to earn the victory for Canyon (3-0). Mark Polizzi hit a three-run home run in the third inning and Matt Fry doubled, singled and drove in two for the Comanches.

San Clemente 5, Lakewood 3--Billy Pinney’s two-run single in the seventh broke a 3-3 tie for San Clemente (3-0). Chase Stroupe had two hits and tossed a five-hitter with seven strikeouts for the Tritons.

In a consolation game:

Fountain Valley 3, Long Beach Wilson 1--Blake Davis had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs for the Barons (2-1). Pitcher Keith Mastel went the distance, striking out seven and allowing four hits.

In nonleague boys’ golf:

No. 7 Brea Olinda 385, Orange Lutheran 391--Junior Ryan Wright shot one-over 72 for Brea Olinda at Willowick and El Prado.

No. 6 Irvine 424, University 425--Hunter Kenihan of University shot an 80 to earn medalist honors, but Irvine won with a team effort under soggy conditions at Oak Creek and Strawberry Farms.

In nonleague softball:

Katella 9, Magnolia 0--Stacey Gardner pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts and three walks. Katella had 12 hits, including three by catcher A.J. Ratliff.

Rancho Alamitos 2, Trabuco Hills 0--Sophomore Kelly Yost pitched a shutout with nine strikeouts in her first varsity start for visiting Rancho Alamitos (1-0).

Woodbridge 4, Mission Viejo 0--Sophomore Brittany Crouch pitched a shutout, giving up four hits and striking out five for host Woodbridge. Shauna Corso had two hits, a run batted in and a stolen base and Maritza Padilla had a run-scoring triple for the Warriors.

In nonleague girls’ swimming:

Foothill 110, Long Beach Wilson 60--Katie Card won the 200 individual medley (2:13.72) and 100 freestyle (54.95) and sophomore Ashlee Henson was first in the 100 backstroke (1:02.04) and 100 butterfly (1:02.17) for the host Knights. Both also swam on the winning 200 medley (1:55.79) and 400 freestyle relay (3:45.92) teams.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Garden Grove 3, Los Alamitos 2--Chris Hernandez had 12 blocks and Robert Rubalcava 26 kills for for the host Argonauts (3-0), who won, 14-16, 15-6, 12-15, 15-8, 15-7.

No. 8 San Clemente 3, Northwood 2--Setter Dan Talcott had 45 assists, Nick Gardner had 15 kills and Eli Owens added 10 for the host Tritons (1-0), who prevailed, 10-15, 15-2, 13-15, 15-8, 15-7.
