Chavez Powers Sylmar Past San Pedro, 15-10

Hector Chavez had three hits, drove in five runs and scored twice to help Sylmar High beat San Pedro, 15-10, on Thursday in pool play of the Westside baseball tournament at Sylmar.

Chavez hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to give Sylmar an 11-6 lead.

Jamie Mah was three for three with two runs batted in and scored four runs for the Spartans (3-0). Mah’s two-run home run in the third broke a 6-6 tie.

Sylmar hosts Alemany at 3 p.m. today in a Red Division semifinal.

In other Westside tournament games:

Alemany 9, Buena 2--Cory Fama drove in three runs with a two-run single and a bases-loaded walk for the Indians (3-0) at Alemany.

A.J. Anthony (2-0) allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one in four innings. He gave up two unearned runs.

Royal 11, Beverly Hills 1--Brian Talley had two hits and two RBIs for visiting Royal.

Ryan Keyes and Brian Gunn each had two hits and an RBI for the Highlanders (3-0), who host Chatsworth at 3 p.m. today in a Red Division semifinal.

Hawthorne 12, San Fernando 7--Jess Moreno, Jesus Martinez, John Sandoval and Abraham Gonzalez each doubled during a seven-run fourth inning, but it was not enough for host San Fernando (2-1).

Moreno drove in three runs and Gonzalez drove in two for the Tigers, who tied the score, 7-7, then allowed two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Culver City 3, Channel Islands 1--Peter Reveles (1-1) struck out 11 and walked three in a four-hitter but lost by allowing two doubles and a home run at Channel Islands (2-1).

Hueneme 7, St. Bernard 1--Jaime Martinez hit two home runs for the host Vikings.

Oxnard 2, Palisades 0--Alex Merricks threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts for Oxnard (1-2).

In the San Fernando Valley tournament:

El Camino Real 4, Glendale 0--Greg Acheatel and Will Savage combined on a five-hitter and Carlos Gallo went three for three for El Camino Real (2-1) at Glendale (2-1).

Savage, emerging as a solid No. 2 pitcher behind All-City right-hander Acheatel, struck out five with no walks in four innings of relief.

Cleveland 2, Quartz Hill 1--Byron Grubman (2-0) gave up five hits, struck out five and walked two in 6 1/3 innings for the Cavaliers (3-1), who scored twice in the second on a squeeze bunt by Robin Villas and a double by Robert Ellis, at Cleveland.

Chaminade 9, Birmingham 1--Bobby Paschal struck out 13 and Cody Haerther hit two home runs for the Eagles (2-2) at Birmingham (1-3).

Lancaster 15, Burbank 0--Brian Mitchell struck out nine and walked one in a five-inning two-hitter that was called because of the 10-run rule at Lancaster (2-0-1).

Art Ortiz hit two home runs--a two-run shot in a six-run first inning and a three-run blast in a six-run second. Tony Ortiz, Art’s cousin, had a home run and a double.

Antelope Valley 5, Granada Hills 4--Ryan Braun had four hits, including two doubles and a home run, and drove in all four runs for host Granada Hills.

Notre Dame 4, North Hollywood 3--Steve Moss scored the winning run on a balk in the seventh inning at Notre Dame (2-2). Ryan Bejar had three hits for the Knights.

Thousand Oaks 5, Monroe 0--Robbie Quan and Matt Ricatto combined on a one-hitter for Thousand Oaks (1-2) at Monroe (0-3).

Ricatto (1-0) pitched three perfect innings with four strikeouts.

In the El Segundo tournament:

Mira Costa 10, Agoura 4--Mark Taylor hit a home run and Paul Farinacci and Adam Schneider each had run-scoring doubles for Agoura (3-1), which committed nine errors in a semifinal at Mira Costa.

Burroughs 15, Long Beach Poly 6--Mike Silva had three hits and drove in four runs for host Burroughs (3-1).

Tim Murphy’s two-run double in a 10-run sixth broke a 6-6 tie.

Millikan 5, Simi Valley 1--Mike Nykoluk and Casey Belmonte each had two hits for host Simi Valley (2-2) in a consolation game.

Crespi 3, Arcadia 2--Damian Alonzo scored on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning to lift the Celts (3-1) in a consolation game at Arcadia.

Dustin Slade (2-0) allowed three hits and no runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief for Crespi.
