Cookie Tradition Continues

Share

Your article about cookies had me laughing out loud (“Confessions of a Would-Be Housewife,” by Carolynn Carreno, Feb. 4). I appreciate Carreno’s love of baking, how she would employ it to win friends and fatten up enemies. From my grandmother I learned the excitement and satisfaction of baking the sweet, round goodies. Chocolate chip cookies were her specialty, and everyone always loved them. I remember the twinkle in her eye as she set the timer on the stove and put on a pot of water for tea with fresh-baked cookies.

Making cookies was one of the few “jobs” Granny had while living with us. It gave her great status in the family. We knew her poor eyesight was taking its toll, however, when a clove of garlic was added to the dough. She thought it was a nut. We ate the batch anyway, exclaiming that garlic cookies would be the next fad! Soon after that, I was promoted to cookie maker, having trained with the best.
