Allen Greets Old School With Record

Julie Allen set a school record in the 1,600-meter run and helped fifth-ranked Corona del Mar defeat her former school, Fountain Valley, 109-26, in nonleague girls’ track and field Wednesday at Corona del Mar.

Allen, a junior who transferred last fall, broke Kelly Campbell’s 1996 mark of 4 minutes 59.8 seconds by eighth-tenths of a second. Allen, who set a meet record in the 3,200 last week at the Irvine Invitational, won that event Wednesday in 11:11.2.

Jenny Cummins won the 800 meters (2:21.8) and 200 meters (27.4) and anchored the winning 1,600-meter relay team for Corona Del Mar (2-1).

In Olympic League boys’ golf:

Orange Lutheran 188, Cerritos Valley Christian 194--Orange Lutheran’s Matt Amen had an eagle on six and birdies on the first and seventh holes to finish with a four-under 35 to medal at Willowick.

In nonleague golf:

El Toro 411, Laguna Hills 426--Steven Taylor shot a team-low 79 for the Chargers (2-1) at par-71 Aliso Viejo and El Toro Marine Base courses.

El Modena 389, Savanna 434--Ed McGlasson of El Modena was the medalist with a two-day score of two-under 69 at Green River and Dad Miller.

Marina 383, Lakewood 416--Robbie Kramer had the low score for Marina at Meadowlark and Skylinks, getting two birdies on his way to a one-over total of 72.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 6 Woodbridge 14, Canyon 4--Brett Van Ling opened for Woodbridge with a 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 sweep at No. 1 singles. Erik Oijala won his sets, 6-4, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2.

No. 9 Sunny Hills 16, Brea Olinda 2--Daniel Chang and Allen Hsu, the Lancers’ top two singles’ players, swept their sets for Sunny Hills (3-0).

Irvine 14, No. 3 University 4--Eric Aarnaes remained undefeated at 18-0 with his sweep at No. 1 singles for the host Vaqueros (5-1). Sophomore John Park also swept in the No. 2 singles’ slot.

In Garden Grove League volleyball:

Garden Grove 3, Pacifica 2--After losing two of the first three sets, the Argonauts (5-0, 1-0) rallied to win, 12-15, 15-5, 14-16, 15-11, 15-12. Robert Rubalcaba had 19 assists, Ed Rodriguez 17, setter Jose Negrete added 69 assists and Khoa Trinh made 10 blocks. Matt McCall had 31 kills for Pacifica (0-1, 0-1).

In nonleague volleyball:

No. 6 Newport Harbor 3, Huntington Beach 0--Blake Tippett had a match-high six kills for the host Sailors (7-3).

No. 7 Irvine 3, No. 8 Corona del Mar--Chris Kraushaar had 21 kills and John Petrilla had 43 assist in Irvine’s 15-10, 15-2, 15-6 victory.
