Carlon Gives Former Teammates Five but Lancaster Wins, 10-5

Pitcher Jordy Carlon wanted to show his former teammates at Antelope Valley High what they lost.

Fortunately for Carlon, it was his new teammates who showed him what he gained.

Lancaster hit three home runs and Carlon overcame a five-run second inning in a 10-5 victory in a Golden League opener Friday at Lancaster High.

Carlon (1-0) played for Antelope Valley (3-3) during his sophomore and junior seasons before transferring across town to Lancaster (4-3-1) in the summer. He gave up five hits and struck out three in five innings.

The 6-2, 215-pounder struggled with his control, hitting five batters in the first four innings. However, after getting out of the second inning, Carlon, with help of double plays, faced only nine batters in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

“I think I was just too pumped up in the beginning,” Carlon said. “I calmed down and did what I had to do after that. I just wanted to throw well [against his former team], and that made me think too much early on.”

After the Antelopes took a 5-4 lead in the second inning on consecutive run-scoring singles by Greg Culver, Matt Henninger and Eric Nordman, the Eagles wasted little time getting the lead back.

Jason Anderson had a run-scoring single and Art Ortiz hit a three-run home run, his fifth homer of the season, in the bottom of the second and the Eagles took a 9-5 lead.

Matt Park of Lancaster hit a home run in the third.
