A man who burglarized a house and then pulled off a carjacking at a nearby video store was killed Sunday when he lost control of the stolen car and slammed into a palm tree in Buena Park, police said.

Gordon Harris, 36, of Westminster was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital, Buena Park Police Sgt. Chris Nunez said.

Harris allegedly broke into a house about 11:12 p.m. in the 4000 block of Estepona Way, where he got into a scuffle with the homeowners. The intruder jumped out a second-story window and fled with a wallet, jewelry and other items, Nunez said.

Police said the burglar ran to a Blockbuster Video store on Beach Boulevard, where he forcibly took a youth’s red Honda CRX.

He sped away but lost control of the vehicle about two miles later, shearing off a fire hydrant, striking a palm tree and smacking a parked car near Western Avenue and 10th Street, police said.

No one else was injured.
