Foothill Freshman Sparks Golf Upset

Freshman Ryan Citarella shot a one-over 37 Wednesday at Tustin Ranch, leading Foothill to a 195-197 upset of eighth-ranked Villa Park in a Century League boys’ golf match.

Steve Lindstrom and J.J. Katnik each shot 38 for the Knights (5-1, 2-0). Todd Saukkola of Villa Park (4-3, 1-1) was co-medalist with a 37.

In another Century League match:

El Modena 194, Orange 235--El Modena junior Ed McGlasson made three birdies and six pars to finish with a three-under 33 at El Prado’s Chino Creek Course.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 182, Maranatha 215--Medalist Paul Imondi eagled the third hole and shot a two-under 33 for the Lancers (4-3, 3-1) at Willowick.

In nonleague softball:

No. 9 Esperanza 3, Sunny Hills 0--Jennifer Attaway and Kristin Dedmon combined on a no-hitter for the Aztecs (9-1). Dedmon entered in the fourth and struck out nine of the 12 batters she faced.

Huntington Beach 1, San Clemente 0 (8)--Freshman Vicki Batistelli singled to left field with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the only run for host Huntington Beach (6-5).

Troy 1, Tustin 0 (15)--Jordan Maloney’s ground ball to second scored pinch-runner Shannon Beaty from third to win it for host Troy (7-2). Emily Hively pitched a complete game and was perfect through seven innings for the Warriors, outdueling Diana La Riva, who struck out 19 and allowed four hits.

In nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 15, No. 9 Sunny Hills 3--Garrett Snyder and Cameron Ball didn’t lose a game in singles for Corona del Mar (7-0).

No. 2 Los Alamitos 15, No. 7 Dana Hills 3--The host Griffins (4-2) swept all nine singles matches, with junior Jason Wood distinguishing himself with 6-0, 6-4, 6-2, victories. Dana Hills is 4-3.

In nonleague boys’ volleyball:

Corona del Mar 3, Huntington Beach 0--Setter Evan Burden had 53 assists, Forrest Mack had 20 kills and Charlie Alshuler added 17 for the Sea Kings (1-2), who won, 15-13, 15-11, 15-6.

Costa Mesa 3, Santa Ana 2--Carlos Jaime had 16 kills and seven blocks, and Mike Payne added 13 kills and 13 blocks for the Mustangs (1-3), who prevailed, 13-15, 15-11, 12-15, 15-4, 15-7.

No. 9 Edison 3, El Toro 0--Sean McLaren had 27 kills and Cole Moulton had 45 assists and six blocks for Edison (3-2), which won, 15-9, 15-10, 15-12.

No. 3 Santa Margarita 3, No. 5 Newport Harbor 0--Newport Harbor played without USC-bound outside hitter Blake Tippett and lost, 15-8, 15-10, 15-8. Tippett, who hurt his ankle Saturday while playing basketball at his house, also sat out Monday’s loss to Foothill in the Orange County Championships Division I final. Blake Robinson had 20 kills and Damien Scott 17 for Santa Margarita (6-0).
