Share

A man with a handgun robbed a Bank of America branch in downtown Ventura Friday afternoon, police said.

Ventura police said a man in dark sunglasses walked into the bank at 507 E. Main St. about 5:30 p.m. carrying a briefcase or bag and immediately cut to the front of the line.

“He had a gun in his briefcase and he showed the teller,” said Sgt. Darin Schindler of the Ventura Police Department. “He said, ‘This is a robbery. Give me the money.”’ The teller complied, and the gunman fled out the back door, going up California Street toward Poli Street. Police did not say how much money was taken.

Bank customers suspected that something was wrong, but no one panicked, Schindler said.

The police and FBI are searching for a thin man in his 20s, wearing a gray jacket and carrying a black bag or briefcase.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI or Ventura police at 339-4400.
