UCLA Gets Valencia Pitcher

Pitcher Kyle Wilson of Valencia High has committed to UCLA.

Wilson, a 6-foot-2 right-hander whose fastball is in the upper 80s, is 2-1 with a 1.31 earned-run average.

He has 22 strikeouts and five walks in 16 innings.

BASKETBALL

* Kelly Greathouse and Courtney Young of Buena have been selected girls’ co-players of the year in the Channel League.

Joe Vaughan of Buena was chosen coach of the year.

All-league selections include Courtney LaVere and Lauren Sargent of Buena, and Jenni Dooley and Katy O’Brien of Ventura.

* Kenny Jackson, a senior guard at The Master’s College, was selected National Christian College Athletic Assn. honorable mention.

Jackson, who averaged 14.4 points, set school records for steals in a game (nine) and assists in a game (20).

ATHLETICS

* Jamie Lopez, an assistant at Rio Mesa for the last four years, has been named track and field coach at Oxnard’s Pacifica High, which opens in the fall.

Lopez was among four coaches hired by the school. The others are Oxnard High assistant Rocky Valles (wrestling), Oxnard Coach Steve Breda (boys’ golf) and Oxnard assistant Erin Huizinga (swimming).

FENCING

* Derek Snyder, a Chaminade senior, won the gold medal in the under-19 men’s foil division and junior Nick Andryc placed in three events at the Junior Pacific Coast Championships in San Jose last weekend.

Chaminade fencers collected nine medals in the meet, which included 26 teams from California, Nevada and Hawaii.

Snyder, whose title was his eighth in Junior Pacific Coast Championships in four years, placed third in the epee division.

Andryc placed third in the under-16 foil and epee, and was seventh in the under-19 foil.

Chaminade’s Jack Wallace placed eighth in the under-19 epee, and John Carbone, Matt Weiner and Fabien Ricard placed in the top 16.

Meghan Wortham of Chaminade finished seventh in the under-19 women’s epee.

BASEBALL

* Shortstop J.T. Stotts of Cal State Northridge will be the guest on the weekly cable show “Valley Sports 2,” airing Saturday at 8:30 a.m. on ESPN2 in the West Valley.

SOFTBALL

* Tryouts for the West Coast Tides’ 18-and-under travel team will be conducted Sunday and April 8 at Blanche Reynolds School in Ventura. Information: George Baca, (805) 644-4353.
