Cypress Ends Katella’s Six-Year Empire Streak

The Katella boys’ track and field team Thursday lost an Empire League meet for the first time in six years.

Cypress won 12 of 16 events, including three by Mike Hicks, to defeat the Knights, 91-45.

Hicks won the triple jump with a county-leading 43 feet 5 inches, the 110 hurdles in 16.1 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 42.1.

Darren Shorter and David Napper won two events each for Cypress (3-0, 2-0).

In the Century League:

Villa Park 71, Canyon 64--Villa Park’s victory in the 1,600 relay was the deciding factor. Canyon’s Darryl Parker won the 100 (11.1), 200 (22.8) and high jump (6-6).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 74, Sunny Hills 53--Paul Evenson won the shotput (54-0) and discus (128-11) for Troy (5-0, 2-0), which swept the field events.

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 69, Westminster 58--Erik Van Aken won the 100 (11.1) and 200 (23.1) and Phil Smith was first in the long jump (21-6) for the Seahawks (2-1, 1-1).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 94, Capistrano Valley 41--Robert Sickles won the long jump at 20-9 1/2 and David Frazeur the triple jump at 41-1 for Mission Viejo (2-0 in league).

In Orange League girls’ track and field:

Brea Olinda 110, Western 26--Kylie McCuen won the 100 (12.2) and 200 (25.9) for Brea Olinda.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Corona del Mar 105, Northwood 31--Jaycee Mahler won the 100 hurdles (16.9) and 300 hurdles (48.4) for Corona del Mar (2-0 in league).

University 76, Costa Mesa 51--Sharon Day went 5-6 to win the high jump for Costa Mesa.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 110, Capistrano Valley 26--Katie Hill won the 400 in 1:01.7, the 300 hurdles in 49.5 and the pole vault at 9-6 for Mission Viejo (2-0 in league).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 98, Marina 32--Kristy Chester won the shotput with a mark of 39-5 and Annie Briggs won the 200 (26.3) and 400 (1:00.6) for the Aztecs (2-0). Marina is 1-1.
