From Staff Reports

San Fernando 4, Poly 2--Jess Moreno’s clutch pitching and hitting lifted the Tigers (10-2) in an emotional first-round game of the Birmingham tournament.

Moreno relieved starter Abraham Gonzalez (5-0) with none out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth after Poly (5-4-1) scored a run to pull within 4-2. Moreno escaped with two strikeouts and a botched suicide squeeze.

Moreno had two more strikeouts in the seventh and earned a save. His leadoff double started a two-run rally in the sixth, when San Fernando took a 4-1 lead.

It was the first time Poly had faced Gonzalez since the senior right-hander transferred from Poly to San Fernando before his junior year. Adding to the intense atmosphere were injuries that sent two players to the hospital.

First baseman Jesus Martinez of San Fernando sustained a broken collarbone when he collided with Poly’s Zack Sims on a pop-up in the first inning, Poly Coach Chuck Schwal said.

Eddie Baeza, Poly’s top pitcher, went to the hospital for observation after being struck in the head by a Gonzalez pitch in the sixth, Schwal said.
