Forty-five law-enforcement officers from Orange County will depart this weekend on a bicycle trip from San Francisco to Santa Ana in honor of colleagues killed in the line of duty.
The 2001 Memorial Bike Ride, organized by Sheriff Mike Carona, began Thursday with a candlelight vigil in Sacramento. From there, the riders headed to San Francisco and will depart Saturday for a five-day, 500-mile ride down the coast to Santa Ana.
The local contingent, from the Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and city police departments, represents the county’s 45 fallen officers.
When the riders arrive Wednesday, they will lay 45 roses at the Orange County Peace Officers Memorial.
