Titans’ Kay Questionable for Key Series
Cal State Fullerton catcher Brett Kay suffered a strained thigh muscle in the Titans’ loss at UCLA Wednesday and his status for a key three-game Big West Conference series against UC Santa Barbara this weekend was uncertain Thursday.
Kay said he hopes to be ready for the series opener tonight at 7 at Goodwin Field. Trainer Chris Mumaw said Kay’s injury will be evaluated today.
Kay, injured when running out a ground ball in the ninth inning, is one of Fullerton’s leading batters with a .338 average and five home runs.
The Titans (38-12, 11-1) have a two-game lead over second-place Santa Barbara (35-12, 9-3) in the conference race.
Jon Smith (9-1, 2.89 ERA) is scheduled to pitch the opener for the Titans against James Garcia (9-1, 2.62).
Outfielder David Fischer, who hit .371 with seven homers and 43 RBIs for Santa Ana College in 2001, has committed to the Titans, Santa Ana Coach Don Sneddon said.
