Matt Jones

SCHOOL: El Camino Real

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Tennis

SEASON AT A GLANCE: Jones was unbeaten playing No. 2 singles most of the regular season and was promoted to No. 1 for the playoffs. He lost only five games in 16 round-robin sets as the Conquistadores won four playoff matches and their second consecutive City Section team title. He helped El Camino Real to a 17-0 record.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Jones lost one game while winning four sets against Marshall in a semifinal victory. He then won four sets in a 24 1/2-5 victory over Granada Hills in the City Championship final in which he dropped one game to Vlade Kinevsky and three to Nima Roshan. Jones’ 6-0 victory over Phil Weisburd clinched the title for the Conquistadores.

GIRLS

Maureen Farrell

SCHOOL: Alemany

YEAR: Senior

SPORT: Swimming

SEASON AT A GLANCE: Farrell helped Alemany to the Mission League championship and proved she ranks among the elite swimmers in the region by winning Southern Section Division II titles in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke for the second consecutive season. She also swam relay legs to help the Indians finish third as a team in the section finals.

WEEK AT A GLANCE: Florida-bound Farrell clocked 23.72 seconds in winning the 50 freestyle title and 55.46 in the backstroke final. Her backstroke preliminary time of 55.06 bettered the division record of 55.56 she tied last year. Farrell anchored the title-winning 400 freestyle relay team and swam the first (backstroke) leg for the 200 medley relay team that finished second.
