El Camino Real should have no trouble filling its coaching job. Principal Ron Bauer said the school will have a full-time physical education teaching position, which should make the coaching position among the most sought-after in the district.

El Camino Real won four City Championships during the 1990s. Bob Ganssle, who was in his third season as coach, was dismissed last month. Former coach Mike Maio and boys’ soccer coach David Hussey are serving as interim coaches.

Bauer said Ganssle and former assistant Dave Siedelman will return as teachers in the fall and can apply for the coaching position.

Possible candidates include Chatsworth assistant Matt LaCour and coaches Armando Gomez of San Fernando, Steve Thompson of Granada Hills and George Vranau of North Hollywood.

Maio has delegated most coaching responsibilities to Hussey because he had an earlier commitment to coach spring football at Oaks Christian.

Hussey said he hasn’t decided whether to seek the position. He has guided El Camino Real to two City Championships in boys’ soccer and also enjoys coaching baseball.

Will Chatsworth’s domination of the West Valley League ever end? Since 1981, the Chancellors have won or shared 19 of 21 league championships. And the future continues to look bright.

Chatsworth is 26-2, and the junior varsity team will try to complete a 28-0 season today against Birmingham. The JVs are led by sophomore outfielder Keith Renno, who’s batting .515, and sophomore pitcher Chris Fredricks, who’s 10-0 with a 0.65 ERA.

Two former Cal State Northridge baseball players, Ken Kendrena and Mike Sims, could face each other in the second round of the Division IV playoffs. Kendrena coaches Bishop Amat and Sims, an Alemany graduate, is coach at Duarte.
