O’Flaherty Ties for Medalist at Regional
Brian O’Flaherty of Westlake High shot a two-under par 70 on Monday to tie for medalist honors in the Southern Section Northern individual regional at Sandpiper Golf Course in Santa Barbara.
O’Flaherty, who has signed with Pepperdine, tied Kevin Larsen of San Marcos for first place.
The top 24 finishers advance to the Southern Section championships at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs on Monday.
O’Flaherty was among eight players from the region to qualify for the section final.
Jeff Osborn of Flintridge Prep shot a 71 to tie for third and Brian Edick of Hart was among four players who tied for eighth at 73.
Jeremy Bovill of Agoura, Matt Fields of Harvard-Westlake, Lawrence Jarvey of Highland, Colin Wilcox of Camarillo and Devlin Thomas of Nordhoff were part of an eight-way tie for 17th at 76.
Football
Former Westlake quarterback Zac Wasserman has decided to leave Penn State after one season.
Wasserman’s mother, Candace, is battling cancer, a primary reason for Wasserman’s decision.
Wasserman, who redshirted last season, was not expected to challenge for a starting spot this season. At Penn State’s spring scrimmage last month, he completed three of 16 passes for 43 yards.
Wasserman’s options are limited because most football scholarships have already been allotted. He passed for 2,806 yards and 37 touchdowns as a Westlake senior.
Basketball
The Canoga Park High boys’ team is facing sanctions for violating a City Section rule by having players from Birmingham play on its spring league team.
Coach Ralph Turner is not allowed to have contact with players outside his school until June 1.
Motorsports
Damon Huffman of Valencia finished third and sixth in two 125cc races for fourth place overall Sunday in the American Motorcyclist Assn. Chevy Trucks U.S. Motocross Championship season opener in San Bernardino.
