Man Praised for Foiling Robbery in Dana Point
A 48-year-old pizza delivery worker was honored Wednesday by law enforcement officials for pulling his truck in front of a bank robber’s getaway vehicle in the opening moments of what would turn into a wild gunfight that left the bandit dead.
Bernard Wiener of Laguna Niguel was preparing his truck for a day’s work April 13 when he saw a masked man drive into the parking lot of a Bank of America branch in Dana Point and hop out of his car.
When he saw customers with their hands in the air, Weiner pulled his truck in front of the robber’s car and ran to a store to call police.
Officials said Weiner’s action helped deputies track down the robber, who later barricaded himself in an apartment building, set it on fire and then died in a subsequent shootout with police.
Officials from the Los Angeles division of the FBI and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department presented Weiner with a certificate of appreciation and a plaque.
