Ed Weaver; Ohio State Athletic Director Expanded Program
Ed Weaver, 90, a former Ohio State athletic director who greatly expanded the school’s athletic program, died Wednesday at Ohio State University Medical Center.
A native of Marysville, Ohio, and an Ohio State graduate, Weaver became the school’s third athletic director in 1970 after working in university finance, alumni relations and the athletic department. He stepped down in May 1977 after more than 30 years with the school.
He helped modernize the facilities of the university’s athletic department, which grew from 18 to 30 varsity sports under his leadership.
During his tenure, Ohio State’s football team won at least a share of the Big Ten title every season but one and tailback Archie Griffin became the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice.
To create more revenue, two games were added to the football schedule. As a result, Weaver’s athletic budget was always in the black and the department annually gave a portion of its income to the university’s general fund.
