Brian Vahaly of Virginia and Al Garland of Pepperdine, both unseeded, advanced to today’s semifinals of the NCAA men’s tournament at Athens, Ga.

The winner of their match will play either Matias Boeker of Georgia or Guilaume Legat of South Carolina for the championship.

Vahaly defeated Phil King of Duke, 6-2, 1-6, 6-0, in the quarterfinals. Garland defeated Michael Kogan of Tulane, 7-5, 6-4.

Boeker eliminated Steve Berke of Yale, 6-3, 6-4, after earlier defeating Jean-Julien Rojer of UCLA, 6-1, 6-4, in the third round. Legat defeated K.J. Hippensteel of Stanford 7-5, 6-3.

Christian Booss, spokesman for the government agency in charge of the Stasi spy archive, confirmed that the agency would not release Witt’s file before the end of the court proceedings.

British triple jumper Philips Idowu also had the best outdoor performance this year at 56-6 1/2.
