Blackhawks Hang on to Stop Streaking Red Wings, 5-4

Steve Thomas and Michael Nylander each had a goal and an assist, and the Chicago Blackhawks held on for a 5-4 victory over Detroit on Sunday night at Chicago.

The loss ended Detroit’s four-game winning streak.

Kyle Calder, Igor Korolev and Aaron Downey also scored for Chicago, which handed the Red Wings their third loss this season.

Detroit goalie Dominik Hasek was replaced by Manny Legace midway through the second period after Downey’s goal put Chicago ahead, 5-1.

Luc Robitaille had two goals and an assist for the Red Wings.

Edmonton 2, Minnesota 0--Anson Carter and Daniel Cleary scored, and Tommy Salo stopped 20 shots at St. Paul, Minn.

The Oilers remained unbeaten against Minnesota, with five victories and two ties.

Carolina 1, Phoenix 0--Josef Vasicek scored 52 seconds into overtime at Raleigh, N.C.

Tom Barrasso stopped 28 shots and recorded his 356th career victory, moving past Rogie Vachon for 10th place on the all-time list. It was his 36th shutout.

Claude Lemieux received a five-minute major for head-butting Aaron Ward with 1:32 to play in regulation.

More than three minutes of the penalty carried into overtime and Carolina took advantage.

Sean Burke made 26 saves for Phoenix.
