Bud Kaeding of Campbell, Calif., turned back the challenge of defending champion and fan favorite Tony Jones to win the Oval National Sprint Car Non-Winged World Championship on Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.

Kaeding started on the pole, with father Brent Kaeding beside him, and led 42 of the 50 half-mile laps.

Brent passed his son early in the first lap, but the younger Kaeding seized the lead for good eight laps later. Jones, of Corona, attempted to pass the leader twice in the final lap but Bud Kaeding was able to hold off the charge to secure the $25,000 first prize in the biggest sprint car race in the country.
