Sewage Spill Closes Three Swimming Areas

From Times Staff Reports

About three-quarters of a mile of shoreline was closed Tuesday after about 1,500 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Newport Bay.

Harbor Patrol Beach, China Cove Beach and Rocky Point Beach will be closed at least until Friday, said Monica Mazur, an environmental health specialist for the Orange County Health Care Agency.

The beaches were closed about 1:30 p.m. after a blocked sewer line caused the spill at Carnation Avenue and Bayside Drive. City workers quickly unclogged the line, Mazur said.

Orange County officials issued a general advisory urging residents to stay out of all ocean waters in the wake of Monday’s rain, citing high bacteria levels from runoff, Mazur said.
