Mira Costa Eliminates Ventura

The Manhattan Beach Mira Costa High girls’ volleyball team ended Ventura’s storybook season Tuesday night with a 15-10, 15-11, 8-15, 15-6 victory in a Southern Section Division II-AA semifinal match at Mira Costa.

The Mustangs (28-5), who won the Division I-A title last year, will play Newport Beach Newport Harbor in the championship match at Cypress College on Friday or Saturday. The day of the match will be determined today.

Jessica Veris had 19 kills and 11 digs for Mira Costa and teammate Renee Lopes had 17 kills, three aces and three blocks. Teryn Spragg, who has committed to UCLA, had 13 kills for the Mustangs.

Elena DeAlba had 12 kills and 10 blocks for Ventura and teammate Sammy Gilden had 11 kills and seven blocks for the Cougars (22-1), who advanced to the semifinals for the first time in the program’s 23-year history.
