Green Scores 24 Points to Rally Irvine From First-Half Deficit

Jerry Green scored 24 points, including 10 during a second-half surge, helping UC Irvine defeat Oakland University of Michigan, 68-61, Saturday in the second round of the University Hoops Classic.

Trailing, 38-27, at halftime, the Anteaters (3-1) went on a 20-1 run in the first nine minutes of the second half.

The Golden Grizzlies (1-3) made five of 28 (18%) shots from the field.

The Anteaters made 22 free throws in the second half.

Green made 12 of 16 free throws.

Oakland trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half and got as close as 61-56 with three minutes to play, but couldn’t regain the lead.

Stanislav Zuzak scored 12 points for Irvine and Mike Hoods scored 11.

Each made three three-point baskets.

Oakland’s Mike Helms and Brad Buddenborg each made three three-point baskets also.

Helms finished with a team-high 21 points and Buddenborg scored 13.
