Faced with a potential lawsuit, Los Angeles City Council members asked the city attorney’s office Wednesday for an opinion on their decision not to reopen a road vital to the Ahmanson Ranch development in Ventura County.

A motion introduced by Councilwoman Jan Perry said the developers have said the council action “may have legal consequences and potential liability for the city.”

The council voted Tuesday to extend the closure of a section of Victory Boulevard west of Gilmore Street for another 18 months and remove a provision that would open the street when the Ahmanson Ranch project begins construction to the west.

The developer, Washington Mutual, contends that it has a legal right to use Victory Boulevard.

“We are not backing down, but we don’t want to do something that is going to cost the city millions of dollars and put it in jeopardy,” Councilman Dennis Zine said.
