A 17-year-old high school football player died early Saturday after being injured in a game Friday night.

An autopsy on Round Lake High quarterback Michael Lampi was expected to be done today, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said.

Round Lake Area School District 116 Superintendent Mary Davis said Debbie Lampi told her that her son ruptured his spleen when he fell on a football.

Davis said that Lampi had a seizure after he walked off the field after he fell on the ball in the first quarter of the game.

He was airlifted to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he underwent surgery, Davis said. But she said doctors could not stem internal bleeding and Lampi was pronounced dead at 2:16 a.m.

Davis said that Debbie Lampi told her that her son went to a doctor earlier this week complaining about a sore spot on his abdomen, but that the doctor did not find anything wrong.

She did not know if Lampi injured his spleen before the game or if he had a preexisting condition.
