Lions Lose Moore for Season

The Detroit Lions said Wednesday that receiver Herman Moore will sit out the rest of the season after tearing a muscle in his right hip during the Lions’ 31-26 loss at Minnesota on Sunday.

Moore, who turns 32 on Saturday, is Detroit’s career leader with 670 catches, 9,174 yards and 62 touchdown receptions. He set an NFL record with 123 receptions in 1995.

He is a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

If it’s up to St. Louis Coach Mike Martz, Marshall Faulk will sit out Sunday’s game with the New York Jets. If it’s up to Faulk, he might play.

Faulk, who has a bone bruise in his right knee, isn’t expected to practice until Friday.

He’s listed as questionable for the game.

“I would recommend to Marshall that he not play,” Martz said.

Denver quarterback Brian Griese said he expects to play against San Diego even though his surgically repaired throwing shoulder is sore.

Oakland Coach Jon Gruden said running back Tyrone Wheatley has a “sprain or a tear of his [medial collateral ligament]” and is questionable for the Oct. 28 game at Philadelphia.

Guard Mo Collins has a stress fracture in his right leg and it’s unknown if he’ll play against Philadelphia.

Fullback Robert Thomas of the Dallas Cowboys tore a ligament in his left ankle in Monday’s game against Washington and likely will be out for the season.

Carolina quarterback Chris Weinke didn’t practice because of a deep thigh bruise and the team is uncertain whether he will play at Washington.

“I think he’ll be all right, but it’s a concern,” Coach George Seifert said.

Cincinnati cornerback Rodney Heath will have surgery in the next few days to reattach his left hamstring, which tore from the bone as he tried to make a tackle Sunday. He is out for the season.

Chicago released kick returner Glyn Milburn after he bobbled a kickoff and fumbled another in the Bears’ 20-13 victory over Arizona.

Milburn, 30, is Chicago’s all-time leader with 192 returns for 4,596 yards.

New England signed punter Ken Walter to a one-year contract to replace Lee Johnson, a 17-year veteran who was waived after fumbling in an overtime victory over San Diego.

The Chargers’ Derrick Harris returned the fumble six yards for a touchdown.

The NFL is screening its mail and encouraging teams to do the same because of the anthrax letters sent to high-profile targets.

The league is encouraging fans to write players through e-mail on NFL and team Web sites, or by fax.
