Family of Slain Teen Plans Picnic Fund-Raiser

The family of a teenager fatally shot last September is hosting a picnic to raise funds for a scholarship established in the youth’s name.
The Dino Zarate Scholarship will benefit former gang members interested in a college education. The scholarship will be awarded through Journey House, a Pasadena home for youths where Zarate was living.
Admission to the noontime picnic at Camarillo Grove County Park is $8 and includes a barbecue lunch of hamburgers, hot dogs, carne asada and potato salad.
Dino Zarate was an Oxnard gang member who was trying to break ties with his gang and pursue a degree in biology, hoping one day to become a doctor.
The day before the 19-year-old was to return to Saint Mary’s College in Northern California, Zarate was shot in the head by a rival gang member. Anthony Vasquez, 19, pleaded guilty to the shooting in March and is serving a 13-year sentence.
