Burnitz, Sexson Both Hit 3 Homers

Jeromy Burnitz and Richie Sexson each hit three home runs Tuesday night, powering the Milwaukee Brewers past the Arizona Diamondbacks, 9-4, at Phoenix.

Burnitz, who had gone 69 at-bats without a homer since Aug. 27, hit solo shots in the second and fourth innings and a two-run homer in the sixth. It was his second three-homer game of the season.

With a chance to tie the major league record for home runs in a game, Burnitz struck out looking in the seventh. Burnitz drew a walk in the ninth after Sexson connected for a two-run homer.

Sexson had his first career three-homer game. The six homers were the most ever allowed by Arizona.

Burnitz has 31 home runs, Sexson 38.

Atlanta 5, Florida 2--The Braves escaped jams in the ninth and 10th innings, then scored three times in the 11th at Miami.

The Braves moved one game ahead of second-place Philadelphia in the National League East.

Chipper Jones singled with one out in the 11th against Vic Darensbourg (1-2). Brian Jordan singled against Ricky Bones and B.J. Surhoff singled home the tiebreaking run. Andruw Jones followed with a two-run triple, giving him four runs batted in.

Kerry Ligtenberg (3-3) was the winner and John Smoltz earned his eighth save in nine chances.

New York 2, Montreal 0--Kevin Appier pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game this season and Mike Piazza hit his 35th homer at Montreal.

Appier (9-10) struck out three and walked one in his 12th career shutout. He is 3-0 with a 2.29 earned-run average in his last six starts.

St. Louis 3, Houston 2--Woody Williams pitched a three-hitter for his fourth consecutive victory and Craig Paquette hit a go-ahead single in the eighth inning at Houston.

The Cardinals closed within 41/2 games of first-place Houston in the NL Central. The loss kept the Astros’ magic number at seven for clinching their fourth division title in five seasons.

Williams (14-9) struck out nine and walked three in his ninth career complete game.

San Diego 8, Colorado 7--Rickey Henderson scored twice for San Diego at Denver, moving within one run of tying Ty Cobb’s career record.

Henderson has scored 2,244 runs. He had two hits and needs five more to reach 3,000.

Henderson drove in three runs, D’Angelo Jimenez had two RBIs and Damian Jackson had two hits and scored twice.

Larry Walker hit his 37th home run for Colorado and Todd Helton hit his 45th homer.

Cincinnati 8, Philadelphia 1--Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 21st homer and drove in two runs, and Joey Hamilton pitched five shutout innings at Philadelphia. Hamilton (1-1) gave up two hits and won for the first time since defeating the Phillies, 4-2, July 14 while with Toronto.

Pittsburgh 13, Chicago 1--Aramis Ramirez hit his 33rd homer and Craig Wilson drove in three runs for the host Pirates, who opened a 12-run lead in the third inning.

Cub pitchers struck out 10, giving them a major league record 1,250. Atlanta set the previous mark of 1,245 in 1996.
