Trainer Ortiz Has Inside Track on Longshots

Share

When heading to Los Alamitos, longshot players are advised to pay attention to trainer Curley Ortiz. He has struck with several big-priced winners at the meet, most notably The Risque Rebel ($39), The Shy Rebel ($24), Wizard Of Easton ($28.20), Duncan Easy ($22.80) and Flj Chasin Time ($22.40).

Some members of the Ortiz barn will be running tonight. Would She, a daughter of Candyman Bee owned by Ed Allred, will make her debut in the first, an 870-yard race for older maidens. The lone thoroughbred in a field of six, Would She will break from post four and will be ridden by Dennis Means.

A race later, Jerrad’s Desire, a 5-year-old gelding, will make his first start since Dec. 17, 2000, when he faces $5,000 maidens at 41/2 furlongs.

Owned by Christine Schendel, the California-bred faced much better in his lone race at Hollywood Park and worked three furlongs in 35 2/5 at Los Alamitos eight days ago.

Ortiz’s other starter is Rebas Rythm, who will be a big price in the seventh after finishing far back at 58-1 on March 14.

The picks: 1. Got No Whoa. 2. Pal Casper. 3. Go Green Go. 4. Five Wishes. 5. Jake Blues. 6. Miss Absolut. 7. Angelos Secret. 8. White Rule.

Four! In the fifth, let’s use Jake Blues and Character Counts, single Miss Absolut in the sixth, use Angelos Secret and LDS Splash Gordon in the seventh and White Rule, Kid Unit, Reed And Right and No Mas Delor in the eighth. Total cost: $16.

Shots in the dark: Comes A Storm could improve second time off the layoff for trainer Chuck Treece in tonight’s second as he stretches out to 41/2 furlongs, and Reed And Right has a pair of thirds and a second in his last four starts and has a look in a contentious eighth race.

Post time: 7:15 p.m.
