Weekend’s Top Collegiate Events

The Pepperdine men’s volleyball team can clinch the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title by defeating either Pacific tonight or Stanford on Saturday. Both matches are at Firestone Fieldhouse at Pepperdine, starting at 7 p.m.

Pacific handed Pepperdine (23-4 overall, 18-2 in league) its last defeat, on Feb. 21. The Tigers (10-16, 8-12) are battling with Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge for the final two positions in the eight-team MPSF tournament. Stanford needs a victory to secure a first-round home match.

Track and Field

* Cal State Northridge and Brigham Young at UCLA, Drake Stadium, 11 a.m. (field events), 12:30 p.m. (running events), Saturday: The Bruin women are ranked third in the nation behind defending NCAA champion USC and Louisiana State, according to the Trackwire Online poll. BYU is tied for sixth with Kansas State. Senior Tracy O’Hara tied her season best in the pole vault with a mark of 14-11/4 at the California-Arizona Challenge on Saturday. Sophomore Charles Ryan ran a wind-aided time of 13.67 seconds to take the 110-meter high hurdles. Ryan automatically qualified for the NCAA championships with the time.

Softball

* Stanford at UCLA, 2 p.m., today; California at UCLA, 2 p.m., Saturday; California at UCLA, 1 p.m., Sunday: The second-ranked Bruins, whose three-game losing streak knocked them from the top of the national rankings, start a seven-game homestand against Pacific 10 Conference foes. No. 3 Stanford is led by outfielder Jessica Mendoza and first baseman Sarah Beeson. No. 6 Cal is led by pitcher Jocelyn Forest. Stacey Nuveman is batting .543 with 11 home runs and 42 runs batted in for the Bruins and teammate Natasha Watley is batting .521 with 28 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.

Women’s Tennis

* UC Irvine at Long Beach State, 11 a.m., Saturday: These teams will meet for the Big West Conference regular-season title. Long Beach (18-1, 6-0) is approaching its school record of 22 victories set last season. The 49ers have won 16 in a row while Irvine (14-6, 6-0) has won 10 in a row. Irvine has won five in a row in the series, including 4-3 last year at home.
