Giant Rally Extends Phillie Losing Streak

Reliever David Coggin walked in the go-ahead run as the Philadelphia Phillies blew a five-run lead and lost their sixth consecutive game, 8-5, to the San Francisco Giants on Monday night at San Francisco.

With the score tied at 5 in the seventh, Rich Aurilia singled off Rheal Cormier (1-3) and Barry Bonds walked. Both advanced on catcher Mike Lieberthal’s passed ball before Jeff Kent walked to load the bases for J.T. Snow.

Aurilia was thrown out at home on Snow’s grounder and Reggie Sanders struck out. But Coggin walked Benito Santiago and the Giants took the lead. Pedro Feliz also walked to make it 7-5 before David Bell struck out to finally end it.

Snow added a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

The Giants, playing before the smallest-ever crowd of 35,136 at Pacific Bell Park, won their second straight after a four-game losing streak.

Tim Worrell (2-0) pitched one inning in relief for the win. Robb Nen pitched the ninth for his seventh save.

The Phillies (8-18), who walked 10 batters, have lost eight consecutive road games.

Trailing 5-1, the Giants scored four runs in the sixth inning to tie it.

Kent’s home run off Phillies’ starter Robert Person scored Bonds, who singled with one out. Snow scored when Santiago’s grounder was mishandled by second baseman Marlon Anderson on shortstop Jimmy Rollins’ throw. Feliz added an RBI single.

The Phillies went up 5-0 with a four-run fourth inning. Rollins’ double down the right-field line scored Pat Burrell and Travis Lee, and Rollins scored on Doug Glanville’s double. Glanville scored on Bobby Abreu’s single.

Bonds, who hit a single-season record 73 homers last season, hasn’t homered since April 17. He has eight home runs this season, but has been bothered by a sore left hamstring.

Bonds needs just one homer to reach 400 as a Giant, joining Willie Mays, Mel Ott and Willie McCovey as the only players in franchise history to reach the milestone.

Jason Schmidt was making his second start for the Giants since returning from the disabled list. He missed the first three weeks of the season with a groin injury. Schmidt gave up five runs--four earned --and seven hits in 32/3 innings.
