The Los Angeles County Community Development Commission received a National Assn. of Counties 2002 Achievement Award last week for its role in creating the Westwood Transitional Village.

The 40-unit multifamily facility, which includes a child-care center, provides temporary housing and support services for primarily single women with children who were formerly homeless or emancipated from the county’s foster care program.

The awards, started in 1970, seek to recognize innovative county government programs and increase services to citizens. Zev Yaroslavsky, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, presented the award to the commission.

“The Westwood Transitional Village is a creative and compassionate project,” he said. “It provides the opportunity for families in need to make it onto the road of self-sufficiency.”

The Westwood Transitional Village is at 1401 Sepulveda Blvd. and was created through a partnership that included the Salvation Army.
